24-year-old Malachi McGill had a domestic altercation with his fiancée, Ashley Cruickshank, at their Ascent East Nashville apartment late June 22nd. Officers arrived at the residence, but no one answered the door or their phone when they attempted to call them. At 10:56 p.m., they were called back to another building and spoke with Cruickshank and Amber Fields, a third-party witness. Cruickshank stated that she and McGill were arguing over someone she” used to be friends with.” During their argument, McGill yelled at her to leave while throwing her belongings around the room. McGill then snatched Cruickshank’s bonnet off her head, which was when she tried to leave. As Cruickshank opened the door to leave, McGill grabbed her wrist, preventing her from leaving. After trying to break free, McGill hit her in the mouth, causing a laceration to her upper lip.

Once Cruickshank was free, she grabbed her child, ran outside, and flagged Fields down for help. Fields stated that when she saw Cruickshank, she was spitting up blood. Fields added that McGill approached them to ask where they were going, but she refused to answer him. Fields noted that McGill left in a black Chevy Impala. After officers spoke with them, they noticed an Impala driving around the complex. As officers left, they observed a man, who was later identified as McGill, exit the black Impala. After being Mirandized and detained, McGill admitted that he removed Cruickshank’s cell phone from her hand and accidentally hit her in the mouth. McGill further confessed that he pushed her onto the couch and held her down to prevent her from leaving. Malachi McGill was then taken into custody for false imprisonment and domestic assault.
