23-year-old Sterling Merrill was involved in a domestic altercation with his girlfriend, Nicole Gardinier, while at a Lucile Street Apartment on August 21st. When the officers arrived, they spoke to Gardinier, who mentioned that she had been arguing with her boyfriend, Merrill. Gardinier noted that the police were called and had shown up earlier due to their argument. Gardinier claimed that after the police left, the argument continued. She stated that the argument escalated while she was sitting on her bed.

Gardinier then claimed Merrill pushed her down before getting on top of her and yelling at her. She added that she tried to get Merrill off her but was unsuccessful, and in the process, she broke two nails. Officers examined her hand and confirmed that two nails were broken, which aligned with her account. Additionally, officers spoke with neighbors who reported yelling and banging in the apartment. Merrill was then deemed the primary aggressor, and he was taken into custody for domestic assault.
