41-year-old Mary Gibson had a domestic altercation with her husband, Matthew Aaron Gibson, at the Holiday Inn on North 1st Street in the early hours of September 6th. When officers arrived, they spoke with Matthew, who advised them that he and Mary had gone to the Ryman Auditorium to watch the Red Clay Strays in concert. He stated that after the concert, they went to Kid Rock’s Honky Tonk on Broadway. There, Matthew said they met with a group of guys in the same profession as him. He added that they had been with him and his wife for most of the night. Matthew then stated that he observed Mary dancing with a random man from the group and had initially shrugged it off. However, 30 minutes later, he said he saw Mary and the same man kissing in the corner of the bar. Matthew then approached them and pushed the guy out of the way.
After this, Matthew said he tried to get Mary to return to their hotel with him in an Uber, but she refused. Because of this, he got one for himself and arrived at the hotel at 2 a.m. Then, Matthew told the police that he had called Mary’s cell phone 9 times to ensure she was safe and that he could order her an Uber, but she never answered. Around 3:45 a.m., Matthew said Mary arrived at the Holiday Inn in an Uber and told him that she wanted to go home. He stated that Mary then began getting inside their vehicle to drive away, during which he pulled her out to prevent her from driving under the influence. After pulling Mary out of their truck, Matthew moved it close to the hotel so he could put his belongings inside it. While Matthew was in the driver’s seat, Mary approached him aggressively, started arguing with him, and punched him in the nose, leaving a contusion. Matthew stated that Mary continued going after him, so he pushed her away to prevent her from attacking him, causing her to fall to the ground. He said that Mary immediately started screaming and ran inside the hotel lobby.
When officers spoke with hotel security, they told officers that they had only seen a piece of the incident. They stated they observed Mary trying to drive the truck and Matthew pulling her out of it. Then, they said that Mary was being irrational and aggressive throughout the incident and that Matthew was trying to diffuse the situation. Security added that they witnessed Mary approaching Matthew but did not see her punch him. Then, the police spoke with Mary, but she was incoherent at times and inconsistent with her story. She advised officers that Matthew was severely intoxicated at the bar and filmed him on her phone. However, her phone was dead, so she described the footage. Mary explained that the footage showed Matthew having fun with a group of guys he had just met there. Mary added that Matthew approached her at the bar, trying to get her to go home after punching the guy who was kissing her. However, she denied ever kissing the unidentified male. Then, Mary said Matthew pulled her out of the truck and threw her to the ground. Mary also denied that either party was throwing punches. Mary Gibson was deemed the primary aggressor and was taken into custody for domestic assault.
Mary Gibson of Tranquility Lane in Kodak, TN, was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail on September 6th, charged with domestic assault with bodily injury. She is free on a $2,500 bond.
