51-year-old Carlos Cardonell-Perez and Jordan Montalvo were observed in a parked van at the South Main Street AM Express gas station, which had been closed, shortly after midnight on August 14th. Sergeant Poole was patrolling when she noticed a hand reaching through the van floor and inserting a pipe into a gas port. After this, Poole approached and attempted to speak with the two individuals, later identified as Montalvo and Cardonell-Perez, to detain them. However, Cardonell-Perez exited the passenger seat and fled towards the Blush Nail Salon. Montalvo got out of the driver’s side and was placed into custody. Officers later located Cardonell-Perez and detained him as well. During a subsequent search, the police discovered a system of drums, pumps, and batteries in the van used to siphon gas. Then, an AM Express employee arrived, checked the gas system, and advised them that 92 gallons of gas, valued at $330.82, had been stolen. Cardonell-Perez was taken into custody for theft, criminal trespass, and evading arrest.
